Anarchy Groups
- Greater Pittsburgh Anarchist Collective - an anarchist group that operates primarily out of the East End of Pittsburgh. Our goal is to promote the anarchist ideal and to openly fight against capitalism, the state, and all forms of hierarchy that hurt the people of our city and the world. We make an effort to support all types of resistance against the dominant culture that exploits and alienates us and our neighbors. Has a Social Located @ 5001 Penn Ave. We use their kitchen for our Sunday servings
General Activist Groups:
- The Thomas Merton Center - A central hub of activist activity in Pittsburgh and a resource center for over 30 local projects (some of which are listed below). Membership organization of over a 1,000 the TMC is "people from diverse philosophies and faiths who find common ground in the nonviolent struggle to bring about a more peaceful and just society by instilling a consciousness of values and raising the moral questions involved in the issues of war, poverty, racism, and oppression." 412-361-3022
Physical space is at 5125 Penn Ave in Garfield, where you can pick up flyers about many upcoming events.
- Pittsburgh Organizing Group - is a radical organizing group that resists imperialism by use of direct action and creative resistance".
Bicycling:
- Pittsburgh Critical Mass - Critical Mass is a monthly celebration, which brings attention to alternative forms of transportation. They meet the last Friday of every month by the Carnegie Museum dinosaur in Oakland at 5.30 pm. By taking to the streets in a mass of bicycle riders, they hope to remind people that bikes are an efficient means of transport, and that bikers deserve a place on the roads.
- Free Ride - Free Ride! is a non-profit recycle-a-bike shop that enables people of all ages to obtain, recycle, and maintain bicycles. Through educating people on how to recondition used, donated bicycles, we are putting forgotten bikes back on the streets in a reliable, safe condition. We aim to enhance the health of our community and environment by promoting active living and encouraging bicycle transportation.
- Bike PGH! - A Pittsburgh-based cycling safety, advocacy, and awareness organization. You'll find a wealth of local cycling information, news, events, links, and community information here.
Criminal Injustice System:
- Book 'Em - Pittsburgh's books to prisoners campaign. Meets weekly at the Thomas Merton Center to organize and prepare books to ship to prisoners. To get involved, contact them at: bookem@keromail.com or 412-802-8575.
- Fight for Lifers - is a prisoner support program, advocating for inmates and providing emotional support to their members who include mothers, wives, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends of lifers. The group meets monthly. To get involved, call 412-361-3022 and leave a message.
Food:
- East End Food Co-Op - Good for buying stuff in bulk and specialty vegan stuff otherwise do the rest of your shopping somewhere else. *some employees indicate there are still worker rights issues at the Co-Op related to management attempts to disrupt union organizing.
- Farmer's Markets - Fresh Fruit, Veggie, and Break Markets open from approximately memorial day weekend to thanksgiving (weather depending). Monday: Right off Penn Circle in East Liberty. Thursday: in the zoo parking lot. These are probably the two best in the city, inexpensive, mostly local, some organic, and delicious!

- Food Not Bombs - An international movement that provides free vegetarian food mostly to the homeless in opposition to capitalism and war. Serves weekly in Pgh @ 3pm Sunday in Market Square (Downtown) and 7pm Landslide (Uptown). Any questions please email pittsburgh_fnb [at] yahoo.com

- Big Idea Infoshop - Pittsburgh's only radical bookstore. Dedicated to the active promotion of radical/alternative cultures through community networking and the distribution of literature. Located in Bloomfield at 504 Millvale Ave (cross street is Liberty) 412-687-4323
- The NewPeople newspaper - Monthly Pittsburgh activist newspaper published by the Thomas Merton Center. One of the top activist papers in the country with a circulation of 4,000+, it includes news and commentary on local, national, and global issues.
- Pittsburgh Independent Media Center - A democratic media outlet for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth.
- Rustbelt Radio - Radio show produced by Pittsburgh IMC. Featuring news from the grassroots, news from outside the corporate media. Live every Monday from 6-7pm on WRCT-Pittsburgh 88.3FM. And now on a new station- WVJW-Benwood 94.1FM (in the Wheeling, WV area) on Saturdays 5-6pm. Live Web Stream available from: WRCT.org
Queer activism/Anti-Racist/Anti-Sexist:
- Pittsburgh Anti-Racist Action (ARA) is a network of youth based anti-racist groups across North America dedicated to fighting all forms of racism. Pittsburgh ARA is part of this network. They oppose and fight racist institutions like the police as well as organized racist groups like the klan and neo-nazi skinheads. They belive the only way racism is gonna get smashed is by doing it ourselves! So they are not about relying on the courts or the cops... Dont let their name fool ya - they are also anti-sexist and pro-queer.
